Laser hair removal
Laser hair removal that lasts.
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses laser technology to remove unwanted hair from different parts of the body, such as the face, arms, legs, underarms, bikini line, and back. The laser emits a beam of concentrated light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles, which damages the follicles and inhibits future hair growth.
The procedure is typically done by a licensed practitioner and involves multiple sessions, as hair growth occurs in cycles and laser hair removal is most effective during the active growth phase. Laser hair removal can be a long-term solution for hair removal, and many people find that they have significantly less hair in the treated areas after several sessions. It’s important to note that the results may vary depending on factors such as hair color, skin type, and the specific laser technology used.
How does laser hair removal work?
The laser transmits energy in a pure red light that is absorbed by the melanin of the hair. It is converted into heat in the root of the hair, which eliminates the cells responsible for hair growth. The pure red coloured light is the most effective to destroy the hair cells, which is why diode laser is so effective treatment for hair removal.
The basic principles of Laser Hair Removal is based on light absorption. In the same way that a black car will become hotter than a white car. This process is called photo-thermolysis. Diode lasers use the principle of selective photo-thermolysis (abbreviated SPTL) to target specific chromophores in the skin, usually melanin or blood. The lasers damage the chromophores by selectively heating them while leaving surrounding tissue unharmed. When treating unwanted hair, for example, the melanin in the hair follicles is targeted and damaged which results in the disruption of hair growth and regeneration.
Are all laser hair removal machines the same?
No, our lasers have the highest power in the market in order to eliminate the hair growth cells more effectively and with faster treatments, and unlike other types of lasers our lasers can treat all skin types, even dark skin. The other main difference between lasers is the way the device cools the skin during treatment, which affects comfort levels and the level of protection for the skin.
Diode lasers is one of the few lasers that uses a fully integrated ultra-cold sapphire tip that is constantly in contact with the skin during the whole treatment, meaning the treatment is nearly painless and skin is highly protected. Most other lasers just have a separate tip that only cools the skin after the laser shot.
Understanding hair growth cycles
The anagen stage of hair growth is the most optimal for laser. This is the active growth phase where the hair is attached to a blood supply. It is important to note that not all hairs are in the anagen stage, they can exist in different phases simultaneously. This is why multiple treatments are needed to target all hairs when in the anagen stage and you may experience the treated area appearing patchy while undergoing laser hair removal.
LIGHT ABSORPTION: Laser energy is selectively absorbed by melanin (pigment) within the hair follicle. The hair follicle and its blood supply is selectively damaged, sparing the surrounding skin so that thermal damage is caused only to the hair itself.
HAIR REMOVAL: Once the hair has been targeted, it can take up to 2-3 weeks for the targeted hairs to fall out. Hair will fall out in patches. Grey, white or red hairs will not respond to the treatment.
Benefits of our diode laser hair removal
Do I need a consultation and preparation?
We definitely recommend it! Everyone’s skin and hair is different that’s why it’s important to assess your hair during consultation, and don’t worry it’s free. During your consultation, it’s also an opportunity for you to discuss any concerns, medications you are taking along with what to expect during the treatment and how to take care of your skin after.
Before your treatment
To get the most out of your session, ensure the treatment area is clean and any visible hair is closely shaved. Discontinue use of any skincare products on the treatment area 24 hours pre-treatment, ensure no fake tan, gradual tan, lotions or creams are on the treatment area. No sun exposure 2 weeks prior to treatment, to avoid risk of thermal injury. Schedule your treatment at least four weeks after any waxing, plucking, or removal of the hair by follicle, or bleaching of the hair. In some cases, a pigment inhibitor will be necessary to avoid risk of hyperpigmentation.
Day of treatment
First, clean the treatment area. You shouldn’t apply any cosmetics on the day of the treatment, so don’t use any lotions or deodorants before you come into the clinic. It’s also recommended that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes as it makes it easier to locate your treatment area.
After your treatment
You will most likely see some redness on the treated area, and it’s also very possible that you’ll have some swelling as well. To eliminate such unwanted effects, a clear soothing gel should be applied specially made for use after treatment. Showering immediately after your laser hair removal session with hot water is not recommended. When you have a laser treatment the skin will remain sensitive to heat for a period of 24 to 48 hours so it is important that the skin be kept cool and free from perfumed or scented products during this time.
A few days after the procedure, everything will be normal again, but it’s recommended that you avoid taking a shower with hot water, or do anything that will raise your body temperature in a time frame of 24 to 48 hours after the treatment. Between visits, the hair should be shaved or trimmed. Any removal of the hair by waxing, plucking, threading or tweezing (removal of hair follicle) will reduce treatment outcomes.
