Skin needling
What is skin needling?
Skin needling known as “Collagen Induction Therapy” OR “Microneedling” is one of the newest, simplest and most effective minimally invasive skin treatments available both at home and in clinic settings.
Micro-needling is an effective and safe cosmetic procedure helps boost collagen production, reducing the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and wrinkles. Unlike other skin rejuvenating techniques that may harm the top layer of skin, Skin Needling stimulates the skin without damaging it, leading to faster healing and improved appearance. The procedure is low risk, avoiding side effects such as permanent damage, sun sensitivity, and pigment changes. Results may vary from person to person, but the effectiveness of Skin Needling can be seen from the before and after images
How does skin needling work?
Skin needling works by creating tiny punctures in the skin using a specialized device with fine needles. This triggers the skin’s natural healing process and stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that gives skin its elasticity and firmness. As the skin heals, new collagen is produced, filling in scars, stretch marks, and wrinkles and giving the skin a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. The procedure is minimally invasive and does not damage the top layer of skin, leading to faster healing and reduced risk of side effects compared to other skin rejuvenation techniques.
What can microneedling do for your skin?
Micro needling plumps and firms the skin while the accumulation of collagen and elastin will overall thicken and tighten the skin addressing any skin thinning that occurs thereby signs of aging skin. Micro needling can help target everything from anti-aging and other specific skincare concerns. If your skin issues have not responded to other procedures, such as chemical peels, then you may want to consider micro needling. The result is smoother.
Firmer, younger looking skin the are many benefits to micro needling some of them include but is not limited to:
- Reduction of deep and fine wrinkles
- Reverses pigmentation and sun damage
- Diminish acne scarring
- Helps resolve other forms of scarring
- Minimise enlarged dilated pores
- Enhance skin texture
- Hyperpigmentation
- Removal of age spots
- Stretch mark removal
Why is skin needling (microneedling) so effective?
The concept behind micro needling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage. Micro needling allows for a controlled induction of the skins self-repair mechanism by creating micro “injuries” to the sub-epidermal layer thus provoking the skin’s natural repair response of collagen synthesis. Frequently practiced using a titanium based, pen shaped tool with tiny, sterilized needles that punctures the skin’s surface without the risk of permanent scarring.
How long will it take to see microneedling results?
Everyone loves instant gratification. However, there are a few things in life that are worth the wait. This includes micro needling and its broad range of benefits. According to a 2008 study, skin treated with four micro needling sessions spaced one month apart produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin six months after completing treatment. However, from micro needling alone, you will look plump, pink, and luminous for a couple of weeks. On a short-term basis, it plumps the skin and makes the skin look more radiant from inflammation and very superficial swelling. Some of the results, such as skin tightening would show up almost immediately. However, others would take around 4 – 6 weeks to fully develop. This is the time taken by the average human body to produce collagen for newer and healthier looking skin.
Is skin needling safe?

Skin needling preparation
Here are some points that you need to consider before and the skin needling treatments:
Skin needling pre-care
Prior to the procedure, your skin therapist may ask you to stop taking certain medications. This is to ensure that there are no negative interactions between treatments you are already receiving and the micro needling. Any preparations necessary will be discussed during your consultation. Day before treatement: Step 1: Please wash your face with a gentle cleanser and avoid wearing any makeup, lotion, perfume, or serums when you go to your appointment. Step 2: Apply a topical lidocaine (numbing cream) to the treatment area 30-45 minutes before arriving to your appointment.
Skin needling after-care
You might initially notice a little redness. This is because of the tiny wounds created in your skin, which leave it in a more sensitive and vulnerable state. This also means you need to be a little more careful than usual to protect it. For this reason, you be rigorous in applying/reapplying sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, even if you’re only spending minimal amounts of time outdoors. It’s important that you steer clear of certain environments specifically those that pose exposure of large amounts of bacteria, such as swimming pools or outdoor ponds. By introducing your wounds to such environments, they can interfere with the healing process by causing an infection and putting your skin’s health at risk. When at home take extra care in preventing further irritation of your skin by avoiding rough soaps and harsh exfoliants. Beyond that, you should be able to immediately return to your regular schedule of work or school and go about your day as usual state. This also means you need to be a little more careful than usual to protect it. Days after treatment Day 1-2: Following your appointment you may experience redness and light swelling, you may also feel warm to touch however this should last no longer than a day or two. Day 3-5: You may experience your skin becoming slightly dry and flaky, this is normal while the dead skin cells are being stimulated upwards resulting to this cause.
What does the recovery time look like with skin needling procedure?
- 60 Minutes: Reddening and possible spot bleeding, pores still open.
- Up to 24 hours: Rash, red dots, minor swelling.
- 1 – 2 days: Rash, red dots, reduced swelling, minor itching, dry/tight sensation.
- 2 – 3 days: Reduced rash, fading of red dots, dissipated swelling, reduced itching, minor skin flaking.
- 3 – 4 days: Potential slight dryness.
- 4 – 5 days: Full recovery with normalised function.
- 3 weeks: Improvement in pigmentation begins.
- 4 – 6 weeks: Improvements in lines, wrinkles and scarring begins.
FAQs about skin needling treatment
Our certified skin therapist will utilise a skin needling pen, which contains many needle points, is rolled across the face, which then pricks the skin hundreds of times. A numbing cream is often applied 30 minutes prior to the procedure for optimal comfort. A hyaluronic acid serum/growth factor serum is applied as well, which enhances collagen production. This process is repeated until the entire face is treated. After the Skin Needling procedure is complete, a healing serum is applied to the skin for optimum healing and effects.
The typical Skin Needling procedure lasts between 20-45 minutes, which includes the application of the numbing cream and the serums. We will ask for you to put aside an hour because every case is different and we like to be thorough with every client.
This depends on how sensitive your skin is. Akin to feeling like sandpaper rubbing across your face, your skin may be more sensitive in naturally thinner areas such as around the eyes and mouth. It can be described as “uncomfortable.” If a numbing cream is used, this discomfort is greatly reduced.
Immediately following Skin Needling expect your skin to be red and flushed, similar to a mild sunburn. Some clients will experience mild swelling, tightness, and pinpoint bleeding which can last 24 – 72 hours. Otherwise for others, afterwards, patients report experiencing glowing skin for a few days. Full results will be visible after about 2-4 weeks after the swelling goes down. You will continue to see fuller, plumper skin for up to 3 months after your treatment.
After a skin needling procedure your face will likely appear reddish with slight swelling present. Minimal bleeding may also occur as well in small areas for the first 24-48 hours. We suggest you don’t book this procedure on the same day of a big event, rather give yourself at least a week out to be safe.
Recovery time is very, very minimal. Total healing time depends of the depth of the treatment, skin type and skin condition and one can expect slight peeling and dry skin. Your skin will be swollen for a few days afterwards, and may remain slightly pink for up to 48 hours after the procedure. You can resume your normal activities immediately afterwards with little to no impact to your daily life. However, it is recommended to forego makeup for a few days afterwards due to the pores being opened and are in the healing process.
Again, this will vary for all patients, depending on their skin condition and the results they are seeking. A series of 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is ideal for optimal results. Some conditions like deep wrinkles, advanced photo-ageing, stretch marks and acne scars will need 6 – 8 treatments.
We believe Skin Needling is the solution for those who want to look younger and feel better about their appearance. We’re all beautiful people, but sometimes we don’t feel like it. Skin Needling is a quick procedure that can take years off your looks, diminish those scars from childhood, and reduce the appearance of stretch marks, leaving you feeling amazing and more self-confident.
